This collection is contains the letters and excerpts of journal entries (1804-1828) by Thomas Bolling Robertson with transcriptions, research notes, and footnotes by Prichard and Jane Ferguson's correspondence (1821-1827, 1838-1839, 1852-1853, 1880, 1896-1897). Letters by Robertson to his sister Mary, also called Polly, and his father, William Robertson in Virginia, relate his political and personal activities in Louisiana and his overland and river trips between Louisiana and Washington, D.C. He describes onboard conditions and the landscape, economic conditions, and people in the settlements along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and in the Florida Parishes. Additionally, he discusses his activities and election as representative, governor, and judge; friction between the French and Americans in Louisiana, and yellow fever in New Orleans. He also relates his health, views on marriage and his marriage prospects, and his financial situation, circumstances, and social activities in New Orleans. He describes his sojourns at Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian, Miss. and other area resorts. Family news and brotherly advice are included in the letters. Prichard's research material includes the projected footnotes for his project to edit the Robertson letters. These contain helpful information about the people, places, and events mentioned in the letters. The correspondence of Jane Ferguson consists of letters from her children and the New Orleans firm Buckner and Stanton. Family letters relate the children's journey from New Orleans to New York, George's medical studies there and his expenses, and news of family members and Natchez acquaintances. Cotton factors' letters, many written on the NEW ORLEANS PRICE CURRENT, COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCER, AND MERCHANTS' TRANSCRIPT, relate the sale of Ferguson's cotton and describe the activity of the cotton market, prices, and quality. Ferguson's accounts with the firm are also included. Additional items include communications to Aylett Buckner from factors about similar cotton-trade related topics and accounts for Fruit Plantation, Plaquemine, Iberville Parish, La., which belonged to John Wilbert, and a letter to Wilbert from his brother-in-law John G. Moll about yellow fever in New Orleans.
